Washington – Sen. Chuck Schumer called on the federal government Saturday to probe the 2010 U.S. Census’ finding that New York City had grown by a mere trickle.

“These numbers cry out for investigation,” Schumer said, adding his voice to a chorus of critics, including Mayor Bloomberg, who have railed against the decennial count.

“I’m going to put a lot of pressure on them to do it,” he said. “For the census director to just shrug his shoulders … isn’t good enough.”

The U.S. Census reported that the city grew by 166,855 over a decade to 8.175 million despite a Census estimate last year that reported the city was home to 8.3million people.

Schumer called for the investigation in a letter to U.S. Department of Commerce Secretary Gary Locke and U.S. Census Bureau Director Robert Groves.

Schumer said New York could be shortchanged federal aid because of the count.

Nothing wrong with the count. Schumer needs to go away. Residents needed to be honest with enumerator or should have mailed in the postage paid count.

The sad reality is that the leadership in some heimeshe communities either did not actively encourage participation in the census or actually discouraged responding. We read here on VIN last year postings from misguided yidden who refused to participate because it was somehow against halacha to be counted by goyim, that the information c’v might be used in a “roundup of yidden when things got really bad” and other nareshkeit. Some simply didn’t understand how the census meant money from federal grants allocted to their communities. Now they are paying the price and Schmuer’s whining is too little and too late. Blame the rabbonim and askanim who failed to actively promote census participation.

I haven’t been around for that many decades, yet observed all these whining of ‘undercount’ are regular and predictable. Usually from black politicians and not, it appears, Jews. Truth is, most large American cities lose populations or don’t grow, while the suburbs around them swell.

This is very much true of my Baltimore even though the frum community grew beyond the most optimistic predictions in the last decade. But other, especially black, neighborhoods of Baltimore continue to hemorrhage. Even the economic advantages of the proximity to Washington seem to benefit Baltimore suburbs but not the inner city. It is similar in Brooklyn.

Whatever the reasons for this phenomenon, and we do generally know what they are, it is stupid to assign it to the undercount of frum. So stop whining and get on with your lives if you have any.

Bloomberg and Co. do not want to admit that their failed policies are driving people out of NYC. The toxic business environment, high taxes, burdensome regulations have made NYC a very unattractive place to live or grow a small business.

Thanks Mr. Bloomberg for destroying what Guiliani has worked so hard to build up.

Try This…. all enumerator and districts had printouts of each street and each house(blocks) if a house was not listed, even an apartment add on in the back or downstairs numerous forms were completed to add the unit to the system. when an address was enumerated the computer system set up would NOT allow additional counts at any location. many many many people were hired to keep everything in order. what makes no sense to an individual makes sense in the picture as a whole. confused yet? no one was counted more than once and a proxy FOR SURE WAS USED to count those refusing to respond for whatever reason.
