New York, NY – The organization representing New York City taxi drivers says it will ask the city for a fare hike because of soaring gas prices.

The head of the Taxi Workers Alliance, Bhairavi Desai (BEAR’-ra-vee des-EYE’), says she will formally request the increase next week.
She says the proposed hike would amount to about $1.50 more for a typical ride.
Taxi and Limousine Commission Chairman David Yassky said he understands that when gas hits $4.50 a gallon, it can be hard for the drivers “to pay the rent and put food on the table.” He said he will give their request the consideration it’s due.
They got their increase a while back when gas went up and did not roll back prices when gas dropped back down. This would be a double dip.

These cab drivers are mostly immigrants who work long hours with low pay. They deserve the increase to pay for higher gas costs and just about all other products and services they need to maintain their cabs. Another $1.50 for the privilege of a personal chaueffered ride to the beis medrash, the market or mikvah is no big deal for yidden who make a lot more than these cab drivers who work so hard for us.
perhaps they should get driving lessons first then i would consider it.
they are supposed to get fined if they stop in the middle of the streets to pick up or discharge passengers. they are doing that all the time and i dont see anyone ticketing them. refresher driving school for all of them before they ask for another penny.
I agree. Gas has gone up $1.20 a gallon from lat Summer where I am. While I don’t like the idea of having to pay more, it certainly makes sense that they should charge more. The airlines up their fares all the time when gas goes up.
You care so much about these cabbys whats with all the Heimishe Drivers from our own community why are we not supporting them? Why do we see our own, using Arab or Peurto Ricans or Russian Drivers ? Theses people work hard too and have too live the same life you do. Give them that extra $1.00 too !!!
I’m sorry but they did just raise their prices but I’m worried if they don’t another one they will stop NY. There is enough of the to start a small (large) army. However they should be able to do whatever they want without consequences and it would be up to us to change that. What they are forgetting is in the rest of the country people drive to work and they have been getting paycuts not raises (I understand they don’t look at it as a pay raise just higher cost price but…)
