The man, who authorities say appeared to be acting on his own, was arrested Thursday afternoon at a Co-Op City shopping center. WABC-TV says undercover officers bought eight crude pipe bombs from him.

A block in Bridgeport was closed as investigators searched his apartment overnight.

There was no evidence of domestic or international terrorism ties or any radical ideology associated with the investigation, said William Reiner, FBI spokesman in Connecticut.

Reiner said authorities in Connecticut were helping New York authorities. The suspect, whose name was not released, was expected to be in federal court in New York on Friday.

A state police bomb technician suffered a minor injury when a substance ignited during the search, Reiner said. He would not comment on whether anything was found in the residence.
