New York, NY – When deadbeats refuse to pay their parking tickets, towing and booting aren’t enough, city officials say.

Now they’re going after vehicle registrations.
“When you don’t pay, we’re going to come after you as hard as we possibly can,” said Finance Commissioner David Frankel. “We’ve started looking at every way that we have to collect money from people who are putting the screws to the people who do pay.”
The city sent warning letters in March to 13,000 motorists who had racked up five or more unpaid parking tickets over any 12-month period in the last eight years.
The deadbeats – who collectively owed the city $17 million for 130,000 tickets – were told they’d lose their registrations if they refuse to pay up.
That could mean facing misdemeanor charges that carry hefty fines or jail time if they’re caught driving without a registration.

inflated and often illegal summonses arent bad enough rising all usage taxes waisting money on islands and trees arent bad enough now the billionaire is looking toi put people in jail oh yes dont smoke in a park beach or anywhere the nypd can get you they are giving out tickets for that as well
In NYC there is a class of residents that simply don’t care. They drive without a license, no insurance, expired registrations and inspections. I recently saw a vehicle parked with no registration and a shopping mall kiosk created license plate. I pass this vehicle often and have yet to see a summons on the windshield. Taking away a vehicles registration will only work for those who care. The only effective way to deal with these cronic violators is to tow their vehicles away. The vehicles should not be returned till the fines are paid and proof of registration, insurance are given. The city should also reguire that the person getting the vehicle not be allowed to drive off until a valid license is presented. Tough love is what some could call it, or just respect and observance of the law. Last point…this is more than a dollar and cents issue but one of safety for the rest of us who live and or drive in NYC.
A punishment has to fit the crime. In no other city are tickets that expensive. And don’t forget our mayor doubled all the tickets and reduced parking spots all around the city. Which I see just to be entrapment. Bottom line tickets where created for safety and our mayor made it into a money raising tool as he did with the nypd
So now they can get rid of the tow trucks to save even more $$$
This solves nothing other than turning the city government against its own citizens. This city government acts like a police state rather than the service it is supposed to be of the people.
I love it. Most of the responses here are variations on “How dare they enforce the law!” I’m guessing every single one of them is from someone with hundreds in unpaid tickets.
