Brooklyn, NY – Democratic party leaders announced their choice of Assemblyman David Weprin in the special election for the congressional seat vacated by disgraced Congressman Anthony Weiner, prompting an outcry from an Orthodox Jewish voters group based in Queens.
Mr. Weprin voted in favor of the law which recently made New York the sixth and the most populous state to legally recognize same-sex marriages. Mr. Weprin, who publicly identifies himself as an Orthodox Jew, also said that he was proud of his vote on the issue.
The Community Guardians Group (CGG), an Orthodox-Jewish led grass-roots advocacy group, said it regarded Mr. Weprin’s support of same-sex marriage as a betrayal of not only the Jewish people, but of all New Yorkers. The Torah that was given to the Jewish people also incorporates the laws binding on all humanity. These Seven Laws of Noah explain how G-d Almighty has obligated people of all nations to be fruitful and multiply, and to refrain from same-sex relationships.
“New York has no official religion,” said Dovid Z. Schwartz, CGG’s Director. “But it’s a vicious lie to pretend that it’s somehow un-American to use moral values that are grounded in Torah to guide the decisions of state. The success of this nation comes only from securing the blessings of G-d Almighty, which depends on the fidelity of our deeds to His Torah.”
The Community Guardians Group is a grass-roots organization dedicated to advancing Torah values in the public forum. Online: www.zehjournal.com
