Known for his talent in handpicking money-making traders and for swiftly shedding those who disappoint, the 62-year-old billionaire aims to expand his business by increasing its more-than-$11 billion in assets, say people familiar with the matter.

Like other managers who dominate leadership of their hedge funds, he also wants to broaden Millennium’s ownership base, amid questions from potential investors about his outsized role in the operations and succession planning, the people say.

The talks are focused on a 20%-or-less stake in Millennium valued between $300 million and $500 million, the people say. A spokesman for the New York firm declined to comment.

Any agreement involving Millennium would shine a spotlight on the enigmatic Mr. Englander, the devoutly Jewish head of a firm with a 22-year history. A child of the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, Mr. Englander now lives in Manhattan, but still sometimes crosses the East River to attend services with rabbis and scholars he considers close confidantes. He’s a major donor to Jewish schools and other causes.

There’s a story probably a bubbe mainseh someone asked Izzy why he gave money to a particular yeshiva in light of the fact that they kicked him out, he answered that is exactly why he gives them money, had he stayed in that yeshivah who knows where he would be. Probably another “shvitzer” Flatbush. BTW. I remember his mother A”H. how many of you readers got their Bar Mitzvah suits at Rosa Englander/
