A reader wrote to Gothamist.com that cops have been pulling over cars on the Williamsburg Bridge for the past two days to give tickets to people with tinted windshields.
In NYS front window can only be tinted to 70%, which is almost nothing. The stock tints on SUVs and minivans is around 20%. If you have that on the front windows you’ll get a ticket.
They use the tint-o-meter. You have to send a copy of a receipt showing it’s been removed within 10 days or you pay a huge fine. I think $90 per window plus $50 “surcharge” per ticket.

Again, why do people act surprised when they are ticketed for a rule that has been on the books in New York (and most other states) for years. These rules are designed to assure driver visibility. The legislature has heard testimony several times on the pros and cons of the existing rules and has kept them in place. If you don’t like the law, call your Senator or Assemblyman by don’t kvetch if you are ticketed for violating the rules

You are very mean and not profesional. Toltally uncalled for comment.The cops do it becauseit is extremely unsafe not to see who they are stopping or whether they have a weapon or not. How often am I scared on a highway when a vehicle pulls up beside me and I can’t see the person inside because the windows are tinted. Why does every Yukel (frum as well) feel the shtoddy big shot necessity to tint windows. When a cop is hurt R”L we all cry. Why not the prevention.

Not only safety here is issue…according to Rabunim and Gedoyle Hador giving a family member or co worker a ride in a vechile with tinted windows is an isser of Yeeched…..

Assuming that the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law comes under “dinei d’malchusa k’dina,” where is the heter okaying this law breaking?
Yesterday I saw a car suddenly put on it’s siren and lights and speed up behind a middle aged lady who pulled aside to let them pass. But it was her they were after. Poor lady got a ticket for not wearing a seatbelt, she wasn’t anywhere near speeding, she didn’t go through a red light or stop sign, she was just driving down Quentin Road in Brooklyn. I wonder how they spotted her to begin with, unless they were lying in wait ready to pounce. It was an undercover police car with tinted windows so you’d never know there were uniformed cops in it.
I have Chevy cargo vans with very expensive tools in them i dont want anyone should be able to see whats inside even if i get a ticket once in awhile thats fine with me.
The enforcement of traffic laws for moving violations in Brooklyn (especially in Flatbush, Midwood, Borough Park) is lax to say the least. In my community, the local authorities would have a field day in issuing traffic citations, if they observed only 10% of the numerous traffic violations, which I observed on two recent trips to Brooklyn. I was shocked and dismayed at the lack of adherence to traffic laws, even by frum individuals (i.e. blocking fire hydrants/driveways, double parking, backing up a distance to get a parking spot, going through red lights, making illegal U-turns, excessive horn blowing, passing over a solid white lane marker). Also, I noticed a preponderance of auto alarm sirens, which would go off at various times, and blare for a long period. Tinted windows are inherently dangerous, and should be banned altogether, as the driver and passengers cannot be seen from the outside. Regarding the middle aged lady who was not wearing her seat belt, she should have known better. I have no sympathy for her.

70% is greater than 20%. I don’t understand.

i say tinted windows are great if they are not overly dark.
my rear windshield shattered a few weeks ago from the extreme heat (thats wht the glass people told me) and had i not had a tinted window, the glas would have fallen into the car. the glass all stayed intact due to the tint sheet on the inside (thats what the glass people told me) so to me, if it is not excessive it is a safety addition to my car.

They MAY NOT look into your car without a warrant, even through the window. It’s illegal search and seizure.
70% and 20% have to do with visibility level the lower the number the more sun is blocked by the tint realistically tint laws across the country are very inconsistent and its only below 15% that you really start approaching “black-out” or an inability to see into a car.
