Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said clashes erupted when hundreds of Palestinians exiting Friday prayers threw rocks at police officers stationed nearby.

He said officers deployed non-lethal riot control gear. Police arrested four Palestinians and 11 officers were lightly hurt. A Palestinian official said dozens were treated for tear gas inhalation.

The site is the location of the two Jewish temples in biblical times and now houses the Al-Aqsa mosque. Violence at the site in the past has erupted into deadly battles.

Earlier this week Palestinians inside the mosque threw rocks at a group of Christian tourists.
