The allegations and testimony at the trial were previously reported on VIN. The plaintiffs included 18 individuals and Platinum Events, a company which worked with the hotel staff to plan the plaintiffs’ pool party. The plaintiffs first filed suit in December 2010 following the July 2010 incident, seeking more than $1 million in damages.

The New York Times reports (http://nyti.ms/N5VRS2) that after only a week of deliberations, the jury found Shangri-La owner Tehmina Adaya guilty of violating California’s Unruh Civil Rights Act, and inflicting emotional distress and other violations on the plaintiffs.

In an interview with The Jewish Journal (http://bit.ly/NH89ob), the plaintiffs’ lawyer, James Turken said, “The jury clearly felt that the defendants acted intentionally, with malice, and discriminated against this group of young Jews, and justice was done.” Since the jury found that Ms. Adaya and the hotel had “acted with malice, oppression or fraud,” jurors will decide today how much money to also award in punitive damages. The jury’s verdict was read late last night, well after the courts had already closed for the day.

Ms. Adaya’s spokesperson and her attorney both declined to comment on the verdict.

150K each plaintiff, that’s way too much money. Legal market is just crazy in America. They should have received a few thousand dollars each and the value of their group event reimbursed to their organization. That’s it.

I’m just wondering if a jury in NYC would give justice like this. Would minority jurors stick up for Jews who’s right are violated? What happened to the policeman who was unjustly fired? I hope he’s suing.
