Residents sit on the shore and watch as the cruise ship Carnival Triumph is visible near Dauphin Island, Ala., Thursday, Feb. 14, 2013. The ship with over 1,000 passengers aboard has been idled for nearly a week in the Gulf of Mexico following an engine room fire. (AP Photo/Dave Martin)Mobile, Al – A Coast Guard official says a disabled cruise ship off the coast of Alabama is again moving toward the shore after a broken towline delayed the vessel’s slow journey back to port.

Petty Officer William Colclough says a new tugboat has been secured and the Carnival Triumph is again making its way into Mobile.

He says the ship will be further delayed because of the towline issue, though he did not give a new estimated arrival time.

It had been expected to arrive Thursday night.

An engine-room fire Sunday left the ship powerless. More than 4,000 people are on board the Triumph, and passengers face long bus rides or other travel hassles to get home once they arrive in Alabama.

While their conditions were far from optimal, it should be noted that when our relatives came to the USA from Europe, in the early part of the 20th century, via a trans-Atlantic crossing, many of them came in steerage; their conditions weren’t that great either, as they lived in cramped quarters, and the sanitary facilities were not that pleasant. Further, the crossing took up to ten days, and more often than not, the sea was rough, and people became seasick.
