New York, NY – New Yorkers are wondering what a plastic foam free city might look like after Mayor Michael Bloomberg proposed an all-out ban of the food packaging product.

Industry groups say a ban on polystyrene foam would mean more expensive alternatives, like aluminum containers.
The mayor says polystyrene foam is bad for the environment and expensive for the city to process because it doesn’t break down in trash.
The mayor’s proposal has to be drafted into legislation and voted on by the City Council before it becomes law.
City Council Speaker Christine Quinn supports it. But a similar proposal has stalled in the City Council in recent years.
The Dow Chemical Co. says that while it’s commonly referred to as Styrofoam, that brand of polystyrene foam is not used in food packaging.
Mr. Dictator whats next..?…Quinn arent you running for office.? You lost my families vote…
If it’s really better for the environment why not give it a try?
The next logical step is to stuff city hall staffers into shipping boxes for cushioning.
Where is the UCLA when we most need them. Next step is no disposable bags no flushing the water and no disposable tissues and toilet paper. This is literally crazy. We have absolutely no freedom left….
The problem is that the alternatives aren’t necessarily better for the environment. For example, paper cups are arguably worse for the environment than foam cups. Bloomberg is just considering one aspect, namely recycling/disposal costs. Manufacturing has its own set of environmental issues.
Hmmm…. Use a styrofoam cup for ten minutes and throw it out and it spends 50+ years breaking down in a landfill. Just look back and remember your Earth Science class, I am sure you will agree! Luke.
I think bloombergs got a big bet with some wealthy guys to see how far he can go before getting stopped!!!!
The problem with styrofoam is that it simply DOES NOT break down. Paper decays. Other plastics are degraded by sunlight. Styrofoam can last for centuries.
Mr Mayor
