New York, NY – New York City Comptroller John Liu says his office is auditing the NYPD surveillance camera system to ensure that the department has the right civil liberty and privacy protections in place.

Liu announced the audit Tuesday following an Associated Press report that the NYPD secretly labeled mosques as terrorist organizations. The designation allowed police to use informants to record sermons and spy on imams.
Liu, who’s running for mayor, condemned the police department’s tactics. He called it a betrayal of America’s founding principles.
The audit will focus on the NYPD’s Domain Awareness System. It uses computers to sort data from more than 3,000 cameras in public places.
NYPD Commissioner Raymond Kelly has defended the department, saying it never engaged in racial profiling and only followed leads.
People running for office should have to resign so they dont use their office to campaign.
I do agree that Bloomberg abused his office as well, but where was Lieu till now? These reports have been known for a while including that traffic cameras are set to coincide with fast yellow lights.
Call it racial profiling or following leads. It’s a necessary evil. We need to keep tabs on groups that have shown a tendency towards violence against our country. Radical groups within the Muslim world should be looked into.
Thank Goodness this Liu guy will be out of a job soon. He should just stick to serving soup at the Masbia kitchen.
