Suez, Egypt – Egyptian officials have denied permission for an Israeli container ship needing repairs to dock at a port at the southern tip of the Suez Canal.

Brig. Gen. Mohsin Hamad says the ship lacked certification from the International Maritime Organization that is required for entry to Egyptian ports and the canal.
He said Thursday that a fire broke out on the ship several days ago while it was in waters near Djibouti and that its request to enter the port for repairs was rejected.
Israel’s Foreign Ministry said it had no information about the ship.
Egypt is the gatekeeper of one of the world’s busiest water corridors and the strategic canal linking the Red Sea to the Mediterranean.
Shmuks, Israel would have let them in , in a heartbeat!
Container ships are fairly expensive to run, so it’s hard to understand a company doing so without obtaining the proper papers. So, if the Egyptian authorities are to be believed about the lack of papers, I’d be interested in understanding what the company running the ship is doing.
It is important that subpar ships not be allowed in the canal. Breakdowns slow everyone down. Also, there are lot of subpar ships out there. But the devil is in the details. This is the sort of story that is best handled by the speciality press.
Last Shabbos we read:
וֶֽהֱשִֽׁיבְךָ֨ יְהוָֹ֥ה ׀ מִצְרַ֘יִם֘ בָּֽאֳנִיּוֹת֒
I cannot check this story without knowing the name and the date.
If they need help next time, or if they need food, water etc. we can “think” about it!!
Let them drink water from the Nile!!
Maybe we are talking about M/V Zim Rotterdam (IMO 9398450) suffered a fire onboard on her way to Suez on Aug. 23. She was ordered into Sokhana. But she carries a Liberian flag. (Now who owns the fool thing is a mystery.)
