Jerusalem – Israel Again Says Did Not Poison Arafat

Palestinian honor guards stand at the grave of the late Palestinian President Yasser Arafat, in the West Bank town of Ramallah, 07 November 2013. Reports on 06 November 2013 state the Swiss forensic team that took samples from the remains of late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat a year ago to test for possible poisoning, reportedly finding radiactive polonium up to 18 times above the normal levels in his remains. Swiss, French and Russian teams took samples of the remains after exhuming Arafat's body in Ramallah, and submitted results to the Palestinian Authority on 05 November. EPA/ATEF SAFADIJerusalem – Israel said on Thursday it did not poison Yasser Arafat, making the denial after the Palestinian leader’s widow said Swiss forensic tests had proven he died from radioactive polonium poisoning in 2004.

“We never made a decision to harm him physically,” Energy Minister Silvan Shalom, who in 2004 served as foreign minister and as a member of Israel’s security cabinet, told Israel Radio.

“In my opinion, this is a tempest in a tea cup. But even if it was (poisoning), it certainly was not Israel. Maybe someone else inside had thoughts or an interest to do it.”

Arafat’s widow Suha has long insisted foul play was behind her husband’s death and after the publication of the forensic tests said she thought somebody from within the Palestinian leader’s own circle was to blame.

In the occupied West Bank, a senior member of the Palestine Liberation Organization issued a new call for an international investigation into Arafat’s death.

The appeal was made after the Al-Jazeera news channel on Tuesday published a Swiss scientific report based on bone samples taken from his grave last November revealing unusually high levels of the deadly polonium isotope in his body.

“This matter warrants the formation of an international judicial body to look into it and hold accountable the perpetrator,” Wasel Abu Yousef told Reuters.

“The one who had an interest in his death was the occupation (Israel),” he added.

Yuval Steinitz, Israel’s intelligence minister, dismissed such allegations as “preposterous” and an orchestrated smear.

“This thing (Arafat’s poisoning) is apparently joining the never-ending column of bogus allegations against the State of Israel,” Steinitz told Israel’s Army Radio.

Chief Palestinian peace negotiator Saeb Erekat made an appeal for an international tribunal over Arafat’s death last year, when the Qatar-based news channel first disclosed the presence of the polonium on the late president’s clothing.

Suha Arafat also had an interest in his death and benefited financially. Too me it doesn’t seem like his death was much of a loss to anyone.

What happened to the billions of dollars that Arabfat stole from “his people”? Does his wife have that money? Or was it stolen by the banks in which it resides?

the main thing is that the dog (Mubarak called him that publically when he hesitated signing an already agreed to agreement with Israel) is dead. Now
the place where his carcass rotted is a radioactive environmental hazard and should be destroyed and replaced eventually with a public toilet !

Actually, it would be better if Israel lets everyone think that they DID poison him. That way, other arab leaders will fear that they will always be in the reach if Israel’s long hand.

I read the report. It does not at all say what the media is reporting. Of all the samples tested, only a few contained more than a very minimal level of Polonium consistent with regular environmental conditions. Of those few, almost all contained levels of an isotope of lead that decays to Polonium, with those levels being consistent with natural decay of the lead. They then concluded that it is possible that the lead hid Polonium that didn’t come from lead. In other words, they are saying that just because they didn’t find proof, it doesn’t mean that it didn’t happen. I wonder who paid for this
