“This happened just a short time ago,” Assemblyman Dov Hikind told VIN News. “A woman opened the door to someone collecting tzedaka and the woman claims the man grabbed her breasts.”

According to Hikind, the incident took place in the 13th Avenue area, in the vicinity of 50’s Street. The man was described to be Israeli, Hebrew speaking and in his 60’s. No further details were forthcoming about the incident and detectives at the 66th precinct declined to comment on the incident.

“Tzedaka is fundamental and we don’t want anyone to stop giving, but you have to be careful,” warned Hikind. “This is scary stuff. Just because someone looks okay doesn’t mean he is. Please give, but be careful.”

Every mosdos has a central office where any meshulach should be able to go for a list of addresses from where they can collect and a shomer. Why couldn’t this be the norm?

most israeli’s going for tzedaka are collecting for themslves not for mosdos, you have people collecting for hachnasas kalla for doctor bills or for dozens of other reasons so all those points about mosdos are moot.
the truth is this sort of incident is extremely rare when was the last time we ever heard of such an incident and because of this to paint them all with one brush is just not right most of them are really decent individualls who have come on hard times
There was an incident where someone posed as a UPS delivery and then made a robbery so are we going to owtlaw UPS?
Those that are upset at meshulachim for their own reasons are trying to use this incident for their agenda
So # 14 examine your true motives!!

unfortunately it is getting difficult to know who is collecting for worthwhile causes and who is not; and coupled with the fact that incidents like this are happening, I would advise all women and elderly men not to open the door to anyone. Tell them to put an envelope under the door or in the mailbox.

#14 I couldn’t disagree with you more. It is not a Chillul Hashem but a huge kiddush Hashem. Only Klal Yisroel cares and worries about each other and is willing to give strangers money to help them with whatever their needs are. Think about all the tzeddaka an average person gives a year and no plaques or dinners are given in their honor. The rest of the world is jealous how we care for one another and wish for it for themselves. By the way why don’t you read up on Reb Moshe Reichmann ztz’l to see what giving tzeddaka in a bakavodik manner means. Have a wonderful week and be proud of who you are.

After experiencing a similar episode, my rule is: I DO NOT open doors to collectors of any stripes or color. They go round the shuls begging the men and the wives at home. They’re into double and triple take. My husband gives and not me.

We had that many years ago, the Meshulach followed her into the house and quietly cornered her and did the same. We were out and he had been gone 15 minutes by then. Shomrim picked my daughter up, went round the streets immediately and found him. Before they actually picked him up my brother found them and beat the guy up, Shomrim then removed him and sent him back to Israel.
