New York, NY – Mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration is putting the brakes on the growth of taxi service for the boroughs outside of Manhattan.

The green, outer borough taxis debuted a year ago.
More than 5,000 now patrol parts of the city that frequently were not well served by the traditional yellow cabs.
The city had been authorized to issue another 6,000 green cab permits next month.
But the de Blasio administration is delaying the expansion. It says the issue needs further study.
The mayor’s office denies claims that he feels beholden to the yellow taxi industry.
Yellow cab companies gave de Blasio significant campaign contributions. The companies feel threatened by the outer borough expansion.
So not only does the City eliminate express bus services for the outer boroughs, now it doesn’t want us to have options other than taking the dangerous, overcrowded, and rat infested subways.
De Blasio beholden to a special interest? Who would have thunk it? The answer is anyone who looked at his ordinary record on the City Council, in particular his support for the Atlantic Yards project.
What the Mayor does here is irrelevant. We in the outer boroughs will continue to illegally hail livery cabs and the police will continue to do absolutely nothing, knowing that no jury of outer borough residents will ever convict either a livery cab driver or a passenger.
