The measure, which has passed the state Senate, would create a registry of violent felony offenders similar to the sex offender registry, and it would be available to the public.

Assembyman Ken Blankenbush of Black River says the public should have the right to know if they’re working with or living near an ex-con.

If passed, convicted, violent felons will have to register with the state Department of Criminal Justice Services upon being released from any state or local facility, including hospitals and mental institutions.

The legislation also would require them to register annually with law enforcement to allow for better tracking.

Montana, Illinois, Indiana, Florida, Kansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Nevada already have such registries.
