Jerusalem – The Palestinian Al-Quds University professor who sparked outrage after accompanying his students on a trip the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz resigned this week, citing lack of support from the university and death threats.

IBTIMES (http://bit.ly/1q0PyEO) reports that despite his resignation, Palestinian-born Mohammed Dajani maintains that visits to places like Auschwitz are essential for the next generation of Israelis if there is to be a full understanding of the Holocaust and how it relates to the current situation between Israel and Palestine.
“You need to understand the other because reconciliation is the only option we have. And the sooner we do it the better. Empathising with your enemy does not mean you sanction what your enemy is doing to you,” Dajani said.
Dajani said he faced death threats immediately following his return form the trip, and while university officials initially ignored the threats, it eventually provided armed body guard for Dajani and stood behind his right to “academic freedom.”
