New York, NY – The City Council is considering a bill that would ease New York City’s alternate-side-of-the-street parking rules.

Under the regulation, motorists must move their vehicles to allow city workers to clean the streets.

The bill would allow drivers to return to parking spaces as soon as street sweepers pass through.

Currently, many drivers wait in their vehicles for the full 90 minute-rule to expire.

The bill could lead to a significant reduction in wait times for motorists. It also could cut down on double parking and pollution from idling cars.

how would you know when the street was cleaned? how would the police officer or sanitation inspector know when the street was cleaned?

This is basic common sense. Alternate side parking should not be an excuse to give out tickets, it should simply give the sanitation workers a chance to clean the streets.

How can you prove to a judge that the street was cleaned

All sanitation vehicles are supposed to have GPS systems linked to the internet. In an ideal world, you check the internet, see a street was swept, print out the web page, and park your car. Get a ticket, the web page printout is your defense.

However, since some areas are really filthy, sometimes the sweeper comes through more than once. Especially if you live at the end of the sweeper’s route and then pass your corner numerous times.

Some years ago, Mayor Guiliani was a regular guest on one of the news/talk radio stations. He was asked by a caller why he was ticketed when the sweeper had already passed the block. The Mayor asked that such tickets be sent to him directly, and that he would personally dismiss it. This sanity became obsolete when Bloomberg became mayor, who considered motorists the “kapure hindel” on which to balance the city budget. His first mayoral act was to double every single parking fine. I give him credit for the honesty in stating publicly that this was not about enforcement or keeping streets clean, but about making money for the city. The contrast is dramatic. I would like to see the new mayor do something to make the residents of his city happier to live here.

I dont believe for one second that this bill wil even be considered for passing. we’ve all been saying this for decades. but the same stupid “how will they know it was cleaned” argument stops it from passing. obviously the sweepers dont clean anything and the neighborhoods that dont have street cleaning remain clean even though cars are always parked on those streets as well. so how dirty can it get underneath cars? a stupid meter maid can sit in the truck with the sanitation guy, hmmm? or a car can drive behind the sweeper truck. its easy to implement. but too logistically complicated. so forget it. keep ticketing the death out of us because its fraudulent side parking

This will be a disaster, Lets say alternate side parking is from 9:30 to 11:00 people will double park starting 9:30 and leave for 90 minutes and come back   11:00 to move back the car (like till now), So there will be 2 issues
    1) Some people will double park for 90 minutes since they will not want to sit in the car 1-90 minutes waiting for the sweeper to pass and some people will wait for the sweepers to pass and then park regularly, This will cause massive traffic.
    2) Then the cops will come and give $115 tickets for double parking – obstruction of traffic

More to the point: if/when ticketed, how do you document your defense?

In Flatbush there are many streets where they never ever have alternate street parking, and they look clean. Not sure if the street gets swept around the cars or what. I know because when I go on vacation I park on one of those streets, though not near where I live. An Example is E 21- E 22 and Ave T. I think either E 21 or E22 on the side streets around S and T also has no alternate. Some neighborhoods like Mill Basin have none either ( ?). Rather not have them anywhere.
