FILE - Police and Hatzolah respond to an accident on Rt. 17 (JDN)Monticello, NY – On the heels of last Saturday evening’s head-on collision that claimed the life of a 33 year-old Narrowsburg man, the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office announced on Wednesday the implementation of an immediate crackdown on safety and motor vehicle violations along the Route 17B corridor.

At Wednesday’s press conference, Sheriff Michael Schiff, along with Sullivan County DA James Farrell and Public Safety Commissioner Richard Martinkovic, said the crackdown is the result of 9 fatal accidents along that stretch of highway over the past decade, resulting in 19 lives lost.

In addressing the 17B corridor, which serves as the main thoroughfare between Monticello, Bethel Woods and the rest of Sullivan County, Schiff first praised the DOT for the road’s upkeep, then sharply turned to place responsibility for the number of fatal accidents on motorists.

“It’s the volume of traffic and the habits of the drivers who use it that have contributed to the accidents, ” Schiff said.

Schiff went on to say that alcohol and drug impaired drivers have played a major role in many of the fatalities and that is what the new safety initiative will be actively monitoring.

“Keeping the motoring public safe especially on Route 17B is a priority,” Schiff said. “Our goal is to get through the rest of the summer, if not the rest of the year without another fatal accident. The reason we are here today is to inform the public of this problem and to give fair warning that we will be increasing traffic safety enforcement in this area.”

In outlining the crackdown, Schiff said increased patrols will be actively pursuing DWI offenses, speeding, yellow line violations, passing on the shoulder, seatbelt scofflaws, and cellphone use and texting.

A press release from Schiff’s office said, “The Sheriff’s Office will commence these patrols immediately and will be coordinating this effort with our public safety partners.”

I would suggest the county to install a few traffic Cameras along the Rt. 17 stretch wich will reduce the problems and monitor the traffic flow. At the same time a big income for the county from those speeding tickets.
