Budapest – Hungary Upset About John McCain Comments On Leader

Budapest – Hungary’s foreign ministry says it has summoned the top American diplomat in Budapest after Sen. John McCain called Prime Minister Viktor Orban a “neo-fascist dictator.”

McCain’s comments on Tuesday were made while unsuccessfully trying to persuade the Senate to reject President Obama’s nominee to be the next U.S. ambassador to Hungary. McCain said soap opera producer Colleen Bell was “totally unqualified” for the task.

McCain, who met Orban in February, said Hungary was “on the verge of ceding its sovereignty to a neo-fascist dictator getting in bed with Vladimir Putin.”

Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said Wednesday that Hungarian voters had made clear in three elections this year, all won by Orban’s Fidesz party, “how they imagine the future of the country.”
