Lakewood, NJ – A 78 year old Brooklyn man has been identified by police in a fatal crash that took place last night on Route 9 in Lakewood.

Gregory Mirzakandov was crossing the busy roadway at 5:55 PM when he was struck by a 2008 Ford Expedition driven by 66 year old Lakewood resident John Mills.
Police told VIN News that Mills was driving northbound in the left lane when the accident occurred. at 11th Street. Mirkzakandov was transported to the Monmouth Medical Center Southern Campus where he was pronounced dead at 6:51 PM.
Route 9, also known as Madison Avenue, was closed for approximately six hours last night for an investigation which involved the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, the Ocean County Sheriff’s Department Crime Scene Investigation Unit, the New Jersey Department of Transportation Incident Management Team and the Lakewood Police’s Traffic Safety Unit.
No charges were filed against the driver at this time and Lakewood police are asking anyone who might have witnessed the crash to contact Sergeant William Butterworth at 732-363-0200.
According to reports, Mirzakandov was a tzedaka collector who frequented many shuls in the New York area.
