Police said one officer, 19, was stabbed in the neck while the other, 35, suffered stab wounds to his hands after confronting the attacker.

The incident occurred at the end of Muslim prayers at the Temple Mount, the city’s holiest site known to Muslims as Noble Sanctuary. The compound has in recent weeks been the center of tensions between Israelis and Palestinians.

The assailant fled the scene and security forces are searching the area.

The two men were lightly injured and were treated by Magen David Adom paramedics before being evacuated to the Shaare Zedek Medical Center.

“This is a serious incident in which police officers were targeted,” Jerusalem Police Chief Moshe Edri said, promising to “work to capture the terrorist.”
