Montgomery, AL – A Muslim flight attendant for ExpressJet says she was wrongly suspended from her job last month because she refused to serve alcohol to passengers, citing her religious beliefs.

Charee Stanley, a Detroit-based flight attendant for ExpressJet, filed a discrimination complaint Tuesday with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.

The airline had agreed to give Stanley a religious accommodation, saying she could work out an arrangement with the other flight attendant on duty so they could serve alcohol instead. She was suspended only after a colleague complained, said Lena Masri, an attorney with the Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

Stanley, 40, has worked for the Atlanta-based airline for nearly three years and during that time converted to Islam, Masri said. Stanley approached a supervisor in June after learning that her faith forbids not just consuming alcohol but also serving it.

When the co-worker complained, Stanley was put on unpaid leave for a year, Masri said.

“She was placed on unpaid leave for following the instructions that ExpressJet airlines gave her,” Masri said.

Masri claimed the complaint against Stanley was discriminatory, with the employee noting Stanley carried a book with “foreign writings” and wore a head scarf.

A spokeswoman for ExpressJet said in an emailed statement that the airline values diversity but could not comment on specific personnel matters.

“At ExpressJet, we embrace and respect the values of all of our team members. We are an equal opportunity employer with a long history of diversity in our workforce,” the statement said.

ExpressJet has 9,000 employees, 388 planes and averages 2,200 flights each day, according to the company’s website.

Enough of these people, IF the job is inappropriate for your religious beliefs don’t look for it.Next step will be to have all airlines stop serving liquor,as it offends their religion. After that will come sharia law instead of the laws of the U.S.A. .

They should never had agreed to the religious accommodation. It would never work to have one flight attendant have less work and the others need to pick up the slack. (Maybe I should become a flight attendant and say that it is against my religion to serve nonkosher food? Boom! Same pay, less work!!)

But again, if they didn’t agree to her crazy demands, they would have been sued. Their religion just forbids eating or drinking anything with alcohol in it. Nothing regarding serving it. Or being around it.

She’s next gonna be a clerk in KY. Or maybe in Muncie. Sharia law is her right, right?

    1. Does she have written proof that she would not have to serve customers alcohol. Let’s be realistic, certain people cant comfortably do certain jobs. I can’t get a job at McDonalds and say that i feel uncomfortable serving non kosher. This is stupid.

I am not comfortable with this Muslim stuff. During their Ramadam, they don’t eat during daylight. Does that mean she can’t serve food during daylight hours? Also, when she accepted the job, she knew that alcohol was being served. The arrangement to get around her serving passengers alcohol did not work out. The airline tried. Sorry.
The county clerk took the job not having to issue same-gender marriage licenses. The law changed. She has a case.

To put it into perspective, what if she had a job a bartender?

This is exactly the same kind of accommodation that we routinely request, and get, to leave work early on erev Shabbos. Note that she had asked her supervisor to allow her not to serve alcohol and the supervisor said OK. It wasn’t until one of her co-workers complained that she got into trouble. If i’d have been her supervisor, I’d have told that bigoted so and so to go p… up a rope.

This airline stewardess should go to jail while the clerk in Kentucky is a hero. These gays can drive to another location for their evil marriage certificate but the customers on the plane can’t get their drinks elsewhere.

So if a judge rules that sechita is illegal or bris millah is illegal the shochet or mohel will go to jail. This new liberal fascism is out to destroy society and religion.

Hmm. Liberal fascism. That’s a term that makes no sense. And it’s out to destroy society? LOL.

I personally would be frightened to take a drink from an open container that a Muslim stewardess served me. I would think she might poison me since I am and look like a religious Jew.

Unfortunately the clerk in KY will rot in jail if she doesn’t either resign; or agrees to marry the feigelech. Like it or not (I for one despise it!) the liberal SC judges have mandated “marriages” for these pathetic losers & forced it down the 1/2 of the citizens who believe it’s a travesty if not an abomination. Since we can’t have anarchy, the clerk has to comply or resign. This Moslem who was apparently “choosers b’tshuva” (lehavdil) has a right to stop serving alcohol if it offends her conscience, but can’t expect to keep her job! (Maybe it would easier to understand if we used an exotic dancer who found religion & sues when her boss refuses to accommodate her by insisting that she can’t stay fully dressed during her routine.)

Bottom line, people should act reasonably & follow Hillel’s law; what is unpleasant to you

I personaly think she is right “if it is totally true thqt her bosses told her so especially if she has it in writing, just like i would not want to work on sabbath and would want full acommodations, the only question is how she will prove it was said

It is true that all religions are equal. It’s just that some religions are more equal than others.

A few other thoughts: One of the people above said the couples should simply go to another jurisdiction. But they CANT. MANY areas have a rule that one must get the marriage license in the place where they reside and/or where they would get married.
Plus the obvious: This is the law. So it is SIMILAR in some regards to the flight attendant case but not the same….a govt job of an ELECTED official vs private industry.
Also, Kim Davis was NOT ONLY refusing to give marriage licenses to gays but also ordered that her six deputy clerks would not be able to either, although 5 of the 6 were willing to do so (one was her son, who agreed with her).
Finally, my husband & I discussed this and were imagining the following scenario: a frum guy as a lifeguard who – I guess he is a BT! – suddenly objects to the women in the pool AND that they are immodestly dressed…and orders them to leave. Lol
I personally think people have to take jobs suited to their needs.
