The letter notes that serious global and regional challenges “show that the relations between Russia and the U.S. remain an important factor in ensuring stability and security in the modern world.” The letter, which the Trump team describes as an unofficial translation, is dated Dec. 15.

The text was sent as an attachment to a statement from Trump’s transition team Friday.

Trump said in response that Putin’s “thoughts are so correct,” adding, he hopes “both sides are able to live up to these thoughts, and we do not have to travel an alternate path.”

The exchange comes on the heels of comments by both Trump and Putin about the need to strengthen their countries’ nuclear arsenals.

If Trump should reset relations with Putin with no consequences for his actions in neighboring countries, it’s a win for Russia. He invaded Georgia and Ukraine, supports a separatist movement in Moldova and keeps up the tension at the borders of Estonia and Latvia.

What can Putin offer on that front, before resetting relations? Does Trump want to just ignore that and claim it to be Obama’s and Bush’s problems? What is going to prevent Putin from invading a country again? What will be Europe’s reaction when seeing that the United States, their natural ally, doesn’t side with them anymore?

Trump is so vocal about democracy in Cuba, a country that minds its own business. Is he worried about political freedom in Russia, Freedom of the press?
