In the recording broadcast by Channel 2 News on Monday, Yair Netanyahu tells Ori Maimon, who is the son of natural gas tycoon Kobi Maimon, that the prime minister advanced a controversial gas deal in parliament that benefited his father.
“My dad arranged for your dad a $20 billion windfall and you can’t spot me NIS 400?”, said Yair in the 2015 recording.
Yair has drawn media criticism for living a life of privilege at the taxpayers’ expense and for crude social media posts.
The audio was released amid an ongoing police investigation into corruption allegations surrounding the Israeli leader.
In a statement to the TV channel, Netanyahu’s family said the recording was part of a “witch hunt” meant to undermine the prime minister.
“Your witch hunt has reached a new and unprecedented low with the broadcast of a secret tape of things that were said jokingly two and a half years ago, between young people drinking alcohol,” the family says.
