Washington – Trump Signs Bill For Terminal Patients To Try Unproven Drugs

US President Donald J. Trump (L) hugs Jordan McLinn (R) of Indiana, who has Duchenne muscular dystrophy, after signing the 'Right to Try Act', in the Eisenhower Executive Office Building (EEOB) on the White House complex, in Washington, DC, USA, 30 May 2018. EPAWashington – President Donald Trump signed legislation Wednesday aimed at helping people with deadly diseases try experimental treatments, calling it a “fundamental freedom” that will offer hope and save lives.

Joined by families dealing with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also called Lou Gehrig’s disease, and other diseases, Trump signed the so-called Right to Try bill and said he never understood why the issue had lagged for years and Congress hadn’t acted sooner.

“There were no options. But now you have hope — you really have hope,” Trump said. He noted that “for many years, patients, advocates and lawmakers have fought for this fundamental freedom.”

The bill cleared the House last week following an emotional debate in which Republicans said it would help thousands of people in search of hope. Many Democrats said the measure was dangerous and would give patients false hope.

As he distributed pens after signing the bill at a small table, 8-year-old Jordan McLinn of Indianapolis, who suffers from muscular dystrophy, waited to embrace the president, drawing laughter in the auditorium when he put his elbow on the table and held up his chin. Trump hugged McLinn and kissed him on the forehead. “He’s going to be fantastic,” the president told McLinn’s mother.

The president was joined by Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Scott Gottlieb and some of the bill’s allies in Congress, including Sens. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., and Joe Donnelly, D-Ind.

Trump had supported efforts to gain access to the treatments during his 2016 campaign. In his State of the Union address, the president said people who are terminally shouldn’t have to travel “from country to country to seek a cure.”

The measure would give people diagnosed with life-threatening conditions who have exhausted treatment options the ability to gain access to unproven drugs without first getting permission from the FDA.

New drugs normally undergo years of expensive testing before manufacturers seek and gain FDA approval to market them.

Opponents of the bill said it would empower “fly-by-night physicians” to offer false hope and ineffective drugs to patients who are desperate for treatment. They also said that the bill created the incorrect impression that the FDA serves as a bottleneck that deprives dying patients of unproven options.

FDA figures show it approves 99 percent of the roughly 1,000 requests it receives from doctors annually for so-called “compassionate use” of such treatments. The process generally takes about four days, but permission can be granted immediately by phone in emergencies.

The bill was supported by the libertarian Goldwater Institute and the conservative Americans for Prosperity, which is backed by the wealthy brothers Charles and David Koch. The bill also offers some legal protections for pharmaceutical companies, doctors or others involved in providing the treatment.

The great humanitarian president Obama refused to sign such a bill. Totally senseless, typical of his many policies. Obviously, if someone is dying, there is no reason not to use experimental drugs. The logic of that escaped
Obama. But then, logic was not Obama’s strong point.

VIN … Could ask your Rabbinical contributors to weigh on this issue?
I can think of many halachic objections, and maybe one or two advantages. I am no Rav, and I don’t wanna waste your reader’s time. But a qualified Posek (or two’s) opinions would be valuable. After all, the halachic definition of a terminal person (a goses) and a (un)civil definition are very different.

My teenaged daughter died of GBM quite a few years ago. There was a certain promising vaccine in one of the coutries but it wasnt legal in the US. It wouldve probbly only prolonged her life but it wldve been worth it as she died with every organ functioning only her brain was shutting down. Her vitals were good till a few hours before she died. In short, she hadda a normal quality of life as opposed to brain tumor sufferers that unfortunately shut down slowly and painfully. She maybe wldve enjoyed another few yrs with us. Unfortunately she was gone too soon cuz there was no cure. She was even denied a clinical trial cuz her platelets were a bit off a few months before on a similiar drug.
Im not in denial thinking she would’ve survived the horrible disease as it progressed rapidly but there were definitely better chances for her on other drugs that were denied due to bureaucracy. Thanku Mr President!

My father had ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) for 3 years His first symptoms were weakness in his hands and losing his balance which led to stumbling and falling. He never lost the ability to swallow or breathe. His one hand, then his legs, were affected first; then his arms. The Rilutek (riluzole) did very little to help him. The medical team did even less. His decline was rapid and devastating. The psychological support from the medical centre was non-existent and if it were not for the sensitive care and attention of his primary physician, he would have died . There has been little if any progress in finding a cure or reliable treatment. So this year his primary physician suggested we started him on Natural Herbal Gardens ALS Herbal mixture which eased his anxiety a bit,We ordered their ALS herbal treatment after reading alot of positive reviews, i am happy to report this ALS herbal treatment reversed my dad condition. His quality of life has greatly improved and every one of his symptoms including difficulty in walking and slurred speech are gone. Their official web site is ww w. naturalherbalgardens. c om He will be 74 soon and can now go about his daily activities
