In an opinion piece published Sunday in The New York Times, the Democrat called on President Donald Trump to authorize states to expand testing capabilities, set federal standards for shutting down commerce and schools, and mobilize the military to bolster medical treatment capabilities.

“States cannot build more hospitals, acquire ventilators or modify facilities quickly enough,” Cuomo wrote, saying the expertise and equipment of the Army Corps is “our best hope.”

I agree that the military can do more to help the civilian population. At Lackland AFB, there is Wilfred Hall Hospital, which can assist civilians. At Ft. Sam Houston, there is also a medical facility. There are many other hospitals at various Army and Air Force bases around the country. At the Great Lakes Naval Center, the U.S. Navy has a large medical complex. Since the purpose of the armed forces is to protect the civilian population, their medical facilities and equipment in this current emergency should be opened to the civilian population. If chas v’shalom, a massive epidemic hits the USA, all of the civilian hospitals here would be overwhelmed, as there are not enough hospital beds, or equipment, to handle an influx of many thousands of additional patients. It should be noted that in the last forty years, the amount of hospital beds in the USA, has been reduced over 16%, because of consolidations, mergers and closing of hospitals. During that same period, the population of the USA increased by over 60,000,000.

There are things the military can do. We can provide a small number of additional hospital beds for example. We cannot provide a lot of doctors and nurses. The military medical people will be working as hard as the civilian ones.
