The study was conducted in the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and monitored 5,706 “index patients” who had tested positive for coronavirus and more than 59,000 people who came in contact with them.

Results of the study demonstrated that out of every 100 infected persons, only two of them had contracted the virus from non-household contacts whereas 1 in 10 were infected from their own families.

The study also showed that the infection rate within the household was higher when the first confirmed cases in the family were teenagers or people in their 60s and 70s.

Jeong Eun-kyeong, the director of the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) and one of the authors of the study, told a briefing that “This is probably because these age groups are more likely to be in close contact with family members as the group is in more need of protection or support.”

However children under the age of 9 were the least likely to be the “index patient” infecting others, although the control group of children was small compared to other age groups. Moreover it was difficult to verify findings among children since they tend to be more asymptomatic than adults.
