JACKSON TOWNSHIP – In a lawsuit filed by Agudath Israel against New Jersey’s Jackson Township, US District Court Judge Michael A. Shipp has issued a ruling that has resulted in a temporary win for Yeshivos, dormitories, and Eruvim.

Agudah’s lawsuit alleged that Jackson Township officials had knowingly discriminated against Orthodox Jews when they passed specific ordinances that targeted religious institutions and structures.

Among some of the offending ordinances were: 1] enacting zoning laws that restricted yeshivos and outlawed dormitories, 2] discriminatory targeting for surveillance homes of Orthodox Jews suspected of hosting minyanim, 3] discriminatorily interpreting land use laws to inhibit the building of sukkahs, and 4] enacting zoning ordinances that ban the creation of eruvim.

The officials named in the lawsuit included Mayor Mike Reina and former Council President Rob Nixon.
