JERUSALEM (VINnews) — Israeli folk singer Aviv Gefen is one of the most iconic members of the left-wing cultural establishment. For many years Gefen was known for his anti-chareidi views and his general antipathy towards religion. However the coronavirus and the ensuing attacks on chareidi society seem to have changed Gefen’s attitudes towards chareidim. During the course of the pandemic Gefen defended the chareidim, calling them “my brothers”, spoke at length with chareidi singer Avraham Fried and made a high profile bar mitzvah for his son. In an interview in which Gefen broke down in tears, he said “enough of the hatred for chareidim” and called for unity within the nation. After the interview Gefen received hundreds of messages of support from Bnei Brak residents.,

On Monday night Gefen appeared together with Fried at a joint concert in Jerusalem’s Sultan’s Pool. The two performed songs they had specially written to perform in tandem. Gefen who is not accustomed to such a religious audience, took the opportunity to beg forgiveness from the chareidi sector if in the past he had insulted them ‘out of ignorance’. Gefen also sang together with Fried many other songs including the iconic Mi Ha’ish which exhorts against Lashon Hara.

This is so so beautiful. It must take a lot of courage for Aviv Gefen

Why does the article have to exaggerate what took place and ruin a beautiful gesture. If you listen to what he actually says he says “I want to tell you that I am sorry for…” – Nowhere does he “Beg” for forgiveness. It’s sad that we feel the need to do this in order to make us look better.
