JERUSALEM (VINnews) — A new proposed law from Likud member Nir Barkat could embarrass the Bennett-Lapid coalition and put Israel on a collision course with the Biden Administration, since it would prevent the Americans from opening a consulate in Jerusalem to provide services for Palestinians.

The Americans wish to reopen the U.S. consulate in central Jerusalem which was closed during the period of the Trump presidency and to use it to serve the Palestinians, in accordance with one of Biden’s campaign promises. In the meantime Israel has requested not to implement the move until the new government has stabilized but Barkat did not wait to submit his bill which would prevent such a development.
The former Jerusalem mayor submitted an amendment to the basic law: Jerusalem, capital of Israel, signed by more than 30 MKs from the opposition, including Amichai Shikli, the sole MK of Yemina who did not join the government.
The bill states that the state will not open or establish in Jerusalem any diplomatic representation which serves a foreign state. Barkat presumes that some of the right-wing members of the coalition will support his bill.
“The proposal comes in the wake of the Bennett-Lapid government’s intent to surrender to international pressure and establish a consulate which will serve Palestinians in Jerusalem,” Barkat said, adding that the move represented a security risk since it would allow Palestinians to enter Jerusalem.
Good, tell the biden admin to stop siding with the terrorist scum Democrats back the terrorists and the Republicans back Israel.
