Video Replay: Biden Says ‘I Stand Squarely Behind’ Decision To Withdraw US Forces, Says Afghan Collapse Was Quicker Than Anticipated

WASHINGTON (AP) — Striking a defiant tone, President Joe Biden said Monday that he stands “squarely behind” his decision to withdraw U.S. forces from Afghanistan and that the Afghan government’s collapse was quicker than anticipated.

Biden said he was faced with a choice between sticking to a previously negotiated agreement to withdraw U.S. troops this year or sending thousands more service members back into Afghanistan for a “third decade” of war.

Biden said he will not repeat mistakes of the past and did not regret his decision to proceed with the withdrawal.

“I stand squarely behind my decision,” Biden said in a televised address to the nation from the White House East Room. “After 20 years, I’ve learned the hard way that there was never a good time to withdraw U.S. forces.”

Biden said he’d rather take the criticism over the fallout in Afghanistan than pass the decision to a fifth president. He said the decision to leave Afghanistan is “the right one for America.” He said keeping a U.S. presence in Afghanistan was no longer a U.S. national security interest.

Biden described the images coming out of Afghanistan — especially at the airport in Kabul, where Afghans descended in hopes of fleeing the country — as “gut-wrenching.” Video of Afghans clinging to a U.S. Air Force plane as it prepared to take off had circulated widely on the internet.

But he did not admit any U.S. fault in how the drawdown was executed. He acknowledged that the Taliban takeover unfolded faster than had been anticipated.

About a month ago, Biden batted away the notion of a rapid Taliban takeover.

Biden said Monday the U.S. will continue to support the Afghan people, push for regional diplomacy and speak out for the rights of Afghans.

Senior U.S. military officials said the chaos at the airport in Kabul left seven people dead Monday, including some who fell from a departing American military transport jet. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss ongoing operations.

Afghans rushed onto the tarmac as thousands tried to escape after the Taliban seized power. Some clung to the side of a U.S. military plane before takeoff, in a widely shared video that captured the desperation as America’s 20-year war comes to a chaotic end.

Another video showed the Afghans falling as the plane gained altitude over Kabul. U.S. troops resorted to firing warning shots and using helicopters to clear a path for transport aircraft.

The Pentagon confirmed Monday that U.S. forces shot and killed two individuals it said were armed, as Biden ordered another battalion of troops — about 1,000 — to secure the airfield, which was closed to arrivals and departures for hours Monday because of civilians on the runway.

The speed of the Afghan government’s collapse and the ensuing chaos posed the most serious test of Biden as commander in chief, and he came under withering criticism from Republicans who said he had failed.

Biden expressed confidence in his decision to proceed with the withdrawal and said he was prepared to take the heat.

He said he was “deeply saddened by the facts we now face, but I do not regret my decision.”

Biden campaigned as a seasoned expert in international relations and has spent months downplaying the prospect of an ascendant Taliban while arguing that Americans of all political persuasions have tired of a 20-year war, a conflict that demonstrated the limits of money and military might to force a Western-style democracy on a society not ready or willing to embrace it.

The problem isnt leaving, the problem is the way he left, abandoning billions in military equipment for the taliban to take and abandoning those who helped us and are now in mortal danger, he ran away in the middle of the night and did nothing to save anyone while the taliban overran the country in a week, he is now president runaway, he just came from camp david to give a speech and ran away without taking any questions and is returning to camp david, for what reason did he come back, he could have given the same speech in camp david without wasting taxpayer money on transport to and from dc.

He can blame many things on Trump but at the end of the day, he’s been in office almost 8 months and he messed this last part up. The only way to contain the Taliban is, unfortunately, by killing Taliban. No treaty, agreement, accommodation, etc.

The Taliban travel on empty roadways caravan-style. We should be able to inflict some pain. Then arm Dostum and the other sleazy warlords to the teeth. They will change sides multiple times but that’s the best you get in that neighborhood. Let Turkey fight the Taliban in the north, they hate and fear the Taliban.

After 20 years, it’s clear we can’t train the Afghan Army to fight.

Obama’s and Biden’s secretary of defense Robert Gates said a few years ago “Biden is a nice guy, but he has been wrong on every foreign policy decision in the last 40 years.”
B”h he kept his record going
Btw just sayin, it takes talent to be wrong so much! Even a broken clock is right twice a day!! It’s almost like he’s trying!!!

What should he have said????? You thought he will say that he regrets it?? You think he would admit fault? If Taliban takes over Afghan, it’s not a US national security issue??? Is this guy insane?

Really?! then why did the US invest billions into afghanistan’s education curriculum
imposing progressive socialist agendas such as gender reform into local school textbooks?? Does Biden srsly think we are not aware?

I maintain this fight could have won. It is in my nature to be stiff-necked.

But, once the decision was made by President Trump to retreat, and once President Biden campaigned saying he would retreat, the manner of our withdrawal are minor and unimportant.

Suddenly the trumpoids care about women and girls? And Afghan women and girls? No way. Its just an excuse to gripe about Biden. Trump did the agreement w the Taliban last October, and he was praised for it. Biden carried it out and there’s complaints. Hypocrites.
