The youths, members of the Vizhnitz-Boro Park chasidic group, had been visiting the tombs of Tzadikim (righteous persons) to pray during the month of Elul.

During the last Shabbos, the chasidim, including more than twenty members of the Vizhnitz yeshiva, stayed at the tomb of the Baal Shem Tov in Mezhibozh, where the trip officially ended, but some of the chasidim stayed behind for a few more days.

On the plane back the chasidim started to feel sick but after landing in New York with their teacher and while travelling to Boro Park in a minivan, all of the twenty occupants felt nausea, vomiting, tachycardia, temperature and other symptoms. The minivan went straight to Hatzolah in Boro Park. At the same time similar cases of food poisoning were being reported from private homes in Boro Park, from other youths who had arrived back earlier, as well as from Monsey, Kiryas Joel and other places where Vizhnitz chasidim are located.

Tens of the chasidim were hospitalized in a number of hospitals in stable condition suffering from food poisoning. It is unclear at present which meal was responsible for the mass poisoning.

The minivan went straight to Hatzolah? Why not straight to a hospital?
