ELIZABETH, N.J. (VINnews) — 5 people where found dead a Elizabeth in New Jersey, bringing death toll of the remnants of Hurricane Ida in Northeast to at least 14. The five residents of the Oakwood Plaza apartment complex, on Irvington Avenue, were found dead, On Thursday morning, police were calling every listed resident and going door-to-door to apartments to check on other residents.

Eight of the nine people who died in the New York City were in basement apartments, common in Brooklyn and Queens which are illegal dwellings.
I was aware of 3 fire deaths in Brooklyn basement apartments but these are the first basement deaths by water that I’m aware of. There are good reasons that basement apartments are illegal in New York City.
