JERUSALEM (VINnews) — A huge rally attended by leading rabbis in Israel including Rabbi Chaim Kanievski is taking place in the Arena center in southern Jerusalem. The rally is timed to coincide with the Bein Hazmanim period as well as marking the beginning of the Shmita year 5782, in which thousands of farmers will leave their land fallow in accordance with the Torah’s commands. Leaders of the Shmita committee praised the farmers and said that this Shmita some 680,000 dunams would remain fallow, double the previous Shmita.

The rally was organized by the United Bnei Yeshivos and the Department for Torah Culture in the Jerusalem municipality. During the rally Rabbi Baruch Ezrachi, head of the Ateres Yisrael Yeshiva, spoke out against the current Israeli government, stating that “whatever the government is doing and decreeing is all for one goal – to disturb your studies. I don’t understand, nobody understands, don’t people want Judaism?- Otherwise they should leave the Jews alone.

“They want to be Jews without the essence of Judaism, the reason for Judaism, without the holy Torah and its precepts and when they want Judaism without yeshiva students- they want Judaism without Torah.”

Ten thousand yeshiva students showed their respect for Rav Chaim Kanievski, who made a rare trip to Jerusalem to show solidarity with the farmers who keep Shmita. Rav Chaim continues the tradition of his uncle the Chazon Ish who kept a close relationship with the farmers who maintained Shmita according to halacha.
