Rabbi Mendy Cohen, the chabad emissary in Mariupol, said that the family had asked him for help in evacuating since the area had become very dangerous. The family of 9 children did not want to leave Ukraine but Rabbi Cohen entreated them to leave. Eventually the family went to Dniepro in its car and intend to cross the border and fly to Israel. Rabbi Cohen, who is already in Israel, said that “an hour after they left, they sent me a picture of their house, which was destroyed by a bomb. It is a miracle from G-d that they ran away at exactly the right moment.”
On Sunday, 100 orphans who had escaped from the Ukraine with Rabbi Shlomo Wilhelm of Zhitomir landed at Ben Gurion airport where they were welcomed by Prime Minister Naftali Bennett. Rabbi Wilhelm had left the town last weekend when a Russian barrage began targeting the town which is 140 km west of Kyiv.
