NEW YORK (VINnews) — The plight of Ukraine’s estimated 200,000 Jews is concerning Jewish leaders worldwide, as communities wander on various routes under fire and with few physical possessions to maintain them.

The Satmar Rebbe Rabbi Aharon called his close associates Friday night, including Rabbi Dovid Shlomo Eckstein, one of the leaders of the Mishmeres Chomosayich and R’ Itamar Meisels and bemoaned the situation in Ukraine. The Admor told them that during World War II the Jews said: ‘where are American Jews during the war?’ and now we ourselves are American Jews and must save the Jews who are in grave danger.
The rebbe spoke of various ways to help including establishing communal institutions in Poland, Hungary, Rumania and other countries to help the refugees, as well as helping those who immigrate to Israel to maintain their faith.
On Shabbos there was a special speech in the main shul in Kiryas Yoel concerning the need to save Ukrainian Jewry. It was agreed that Satmar rabbis Meir Zwiebel and Rav Dovid Shlomo Eckstein will coordinate activities. On Sunday, a large group of communal activists from the NY chareidi community held a meeting, including R’ Moshe Margareten of Skver and many other activists.
The activists decided to send an emergency delegation to the borders and refugee camps in Europe and to see what the refugees require and how they can be helped. Moreover a group of Russian-speaking volunteers is being organized to enter Ukraine and find Jews who require assistance in leaving the war-torn country.
Two Satmar guest houses situated in Ujhely, Hungary and Sighet in Rumania are already full of Jewish refugees from Ukraine but the current wave of refugees requires more urgent assistance.
