Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg of the Lundberg Survey said Sunday that the price jump comes amid higher crude oil costs and tight gasoline supplies.

The average price at the pump is $1.97 higher than it was one year ago.

Nationwide, the highest average price for regular-grade gas is in the San Francisco Bay Area, at $6.55 per gallon. The lowest average is in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, at $4.43 per gallon.

According to the survey, the average price of diesel rose 20 cents over three weeks, to $5.86 a gallon.

Motorists should be grateful that there is enough fuel at the various gas stations, and that we don’t have any gas shortages, which were prevalent in the USA, during the 1973-1974 Arab oil embargo against the USA, as well as the 1979 mismanagement of fuel distribution resources, in the USA. In both of those instances, motorists would line up for blocks and blocks, and wait hours, only to find empty pumps. There were even days in 1979, when motorists had to wait their turn, and only purchase gas on a certain day. Hopefully, that doesn’t appear to be the case now. Yes, it is expensive, but at least, we have it. I filled up this morning, and my bill was exactly $50.00 for a little over 10 gallons of fuel. I prepared myself for the “sticker shock”; the Speedway gas station that I went to was packed with motorists, who didn’t seem to be discouraged by the higher prices. It should also be noted that during World War Two, in the USA, it was extremely difficult to purchase gas, and motorists had to buy gas rationing stamps to present to their local gas station, in order to purchase limited amounts of fuel.
