NEW YORK (VINnews) In this video posted by Mishpacha journalist Dovi Safier, Harav Yechiel Perr shlit”a, Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva of Far Rockaway, describes how prior to the establishment of Lakewood, all New York yeshivos, even the most serious which were not “college yeshivos”, had students who attended college.

Then Rav Aharon revolutionized Torah learning in America, by establishing a yeshiva that was exclusively dedicated to learning.

Rav Perr says: “There were many European Roshei Yeshiva, and they all agreed that learning is the ikar, and college should be negated, yet all the yeshivos in NY had talmidim going to college, they were not ‘college yeshivos’, they were ‘serious learning yeshivos’ and boys were ‘serious learning boys’.

But the idea of going through life without a source of parnassah was not acceptable to baal habatim, nor I think did the leadership think it was at all possible to change that.

That was the chiddush of the Rosh Yeshiva zt”l [Rav Aharon Kotler], he made a yeshiva that was completely dedicated to learning only…”

Propaganda and nonsense!
Beis Hatalmud was a learning and Mussar Yeshiva, without even the need to talk about college.

To add to what I wrote: I spoke with the Rosh Yeshiva this morning. I think that the tamtzis had’varim of his view is as follows: College is not for everybody. Some people should not go, especially if the education will have no meaningful effect on their livelihood. (And of course, as we know, especially today, college can have a very deleterious effect on one’s Yiddishkeit, depending on the college.) Keep in mind that the amount of time invested in college education is time that could be spent learning or being involved in other spiritual endeavors. Some people have to go to college. You cannot become a doctor or a lawyer without higher education. Each person is different, and each should be advised based on his own situation.
College must be handled with extreme care.

It needs to be understood within the context of the times during the 1940’s in America most of the people who attended ORTODOX shuls Led by Rabbis who were gedolei yisroel some of the people who attended who were otherwise Mitzva observant and their wives were Shomer Shabbos davened bhashkoma. threrfore the Yeshiva Boys who went to collage did so in order to be able to be Shomrei Shabbos

I wish to clarify what I wrote in my previous post. In saying that “American is no different,” this does not mean that American boys could be handled identically to European boys at the time of Kletzk (or, say, to the average boy in Kiryat Sefer today). Absolutely not. Different places have different infuences, and each much be treated uniquely. American bochurim have to have a structured day in primary and high school. The same may have not been the case in Europe. Indeed, Rav Perr is an educational revolutionary. The Yeshiva of Far Rockaway’s goal is to produce bochurim who want to do the right thing, not only the halachically necessary thing. When this goal is achieved, it is done so within the larger American Jewish framework for raising children.
But America is not different in the sense that when all is said and done, for Torah Jews, it is Talmud Torah k’negged kulam. This truism never changes, regardless of place or time.
