Pelosi’s Ill-Timed Visit To Taiwan Could Ignite Regional War, Rupture US-China Relations

NEW YORK (VINnews) — US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi may not intend to spark a regional conflict or further strain US relations with China with her forthcoming visit to Taiwan. However Pelosi is either extraordinarily naive or obtuse to make such a visit despite Chinese warnings and despite the possibility of a new geopolitical front developing in the Far East.

CNN reported Monday that Pelosi planned to make a visit – the first by a House Speaker in 25 years- despite severe warnings from Beijing of reprisals and consequences. Pelosi’s adamant criticism of the Chinese government and its human rights abuses and the belligerent nature of Chinese leader Xi Jinping mean that she is at best playing with fire and at worst could lead the two countries to the brink of war. The markets have already responded in kind, as Chinese stocks collapsed in the shadow of a looming conflict. 4400 out of 4800 stocks were significantly affected by Pelosi’s visit.

It is unclear how Beijing will respond to the provocative thumb in the eye visit but the options are clearly alarming. China may respond with military action, as it has already sent jets into Taiwan’s air defense identification zone in unprecedented numbers.

Pelosi claims that she is going to show support for the beleagured island democracy and to stress that Washington is serious about its commitment to help Taiwan defend itself. Pelosi sees Taiwan as a symbol of all democracies, desperate to defend themselves against totalitarian regimes bent on expanding their influence through military power and strong-arm tactics.

However for Jewish people the timing of her visit, during the nine days and just prior to Tisha Ba’av, is very inauspicious. The first and second world wars broke out during this period, wars that were caused initially by minor regional disputes which flared into massive uncontrollable conflicts that led to more human misery than in any previous century, with the Jewish nation suffering the most of all.

It behooves Pelosi to carefully choose her words and placate Chinese fury with diplomacy rather than making strident statements which could only serve to fuel the flames. Currently, the US does not recognize Taiwan as a country, although it doesn’t accept the Chinese communist party’s claim on the island. In the past Washington has been vague about defending Taiwan, leaving Beijing guessing about whether it would intervene if the Chinese forcefully took over the island. Pelosi could maintain this vagueness and could continue to be non-commital about US policies towards the disputed island.

President Biden also stressed in a telephone call with Xi last week that there has been no change to the fundamental nature of US-China relations or the position of the White House when it comes to Taiwan. Yet seen from Beijing, Biden’s repeated recent statements that the US would defend Taiwan, may have left an impression that he is not sincere. Pelosi should be careful not to reiterate any promises of assistance which could cause irreparable harm to US-China relations, with possible disastrous consequences.

To be fair, the US does have a rich history of provoking evil governments until the point that they react with war. See Putin, Ukraine.

Probably Biden will lose some of his free kickbacks. He’ll also have to give China more of our money.

Beijing is not considerably stupid. They need stupid to be able to continue their operations and subterfuge without scrutiny. They’ll smoke screen and put on the dog and pony show, as long as they have Joe.

G-d Forbid that Pelosi should skip Taiwan! Once the CCP threatened the United States if Pelosi visits Taiwan; skipping Taiwan would send a message to China that the United States is subservient or afraid of China. That would only embolden China, and their next move could be an attack on the United States! One should not, & cannot show weakness to a bully. It is dangerous!

With Russia’s blessing and support just as china’s support the invasion is going to happen. Perhaps her going there may have actually forestalled it

WWII did not start near Tisha B’av.

Pelosi’s visit is appropriate and it is nonsense to give in to Chinese hatred and threats.

Countries promises of help during a potential war, is viewed only as much as it’s believed they will step forward.

The willingness of countries to step forward for their allies, is viewed only as how important that country is for the alliance.

For the US showing how important Taiwan is, can only have the effect of deterring China from a potential invasion.

The House speaker, is the highest official that has a precedent of visiting, so the US can say that there isn’t anything new, but China should see that it plays an important role in the US alliance.

(if China believe they could win an invasion, and deal with the economic outcome, they will do it. It’s not like China will invade because they’re infuriated with her visit).

You forget the visits by members of the Trump admin in recent years, such as a notable one by Alex Azar that I am pretty certain the same people calling Pelosi (a congressperson, not a member of the executive branch engaging in official diplomacy) naive and obtuse now were expounding on the stable genius of Alex Azar going to Taiwan.

The hypocrisy is amazing.
