NEW YORK (VINnews) — A pivotal vote wil be held in New York State this Monday that will heavily affect how much oversight the government will have over Yeshivos.

The vote, held by the New York State Board of Regents will decide if the givernment can reject a private school’s secular studies curriculum. If approved, the regulations would require that Yeshivos either have an approved Regents program, or be subject to a review by the local school authority.

“We are at a milestone in terms of what has been a lengthy process, working with stakeholders and working with local school authorities to come up with a framework that will enable non-public schools to demonstrate that they are providing substantially equivalent instruction as is required by New York State law,” said Senior Deputy Education Commissioner Jim Baldwin to Orthodox media outlets during a Friday Zoom call.

Over 350,000 comments were submitted to the government during a 60-day public comment period, after an initial draft of the proposed regulations was originally released in March. Most of the comments opposed state regulation of private schools from a philosophical standpoint, according to officials.

Nevertheless, the State intends to proceed with the vote on Monday.

A complete copy of the proposed regulations is available here.

The Amish upstate ha a similar problem. Because the Amish, by religion, do not accept any government monies, money for the schools, lunch programs, Food Stamps, Hud, etc. etc., the court ruled that the State had no interest in compelling any standard of education.
If the Yeshivas took no government monies and if the student body together with the parents and alumni took no government money, the State would have to leave the yeshivas alone. You can’t take the money and then say leave us alone!

I’ll repeat the question I have been asking for a while , what is wrong with teaching secular studies to 15 year olds dictated and vetted by yeshivas themselves? Bitul Torah you say? How many kids can sit and learn at 4pm? Must just waste their time but Abi no English? What is wrong ?
To be clear I am NOT advocating for govt interference. But why won’t chasdisha and yeshvish mesoftas do it on their own ?
Gur in Europe had secular studies
Voluzhin had and only closed down when it was mandated for the majority of the day .
Bobov and even satmar once had in the USA .
What’s wrong with it ?

i think we know what the results will be. but i am not discouraged. after a 10 years campaign of hate and lies the anti frum hate org yaffed has created an atmosphere of hatred towards frum jews and yeshivos, they have enlisted powerful atheist billionaires to attack us, they have demonized us with demonic lies told in pruste newspapers like nyt and nyp, they have told lies to mooch millions of charity money that could have went to starving kids, there is no limit to their hatred for frum people and yeshivos. they have no moral scruples in thir battle against us.we are just simple ppl trying to raise our kids in our derech, we have meager resources compared to the haters who enlist powerful billionaires and newspapers on their side. but we have one thing they don’t have: LOVE. we love Hashem and His Torah we love our children and will ensure that they go in the derech hayashar. if the haters of Torah succeed in getting us thrown in jail to protect our chldren, we will not surrender. we will leave ny and go to paces that appreciate us. LOVE DEFEATS HATE. our love will ultimately triumph against the hate-filled liars of yaffed, i have no doubt to that

One statistic that can be emphasized concerns the population of violent criminals at Rikers Island. The percentage of violent offenders that went through the public school system is probably close to 100% (other than illegal immigrants) while the percentage that went through any yeshiva is probably at or very close to zero.
