JERUSALEM (VINnews) — After announcing Sunday that “the light rail [in Tel Aviv] will run on Shabbos”, Israeli transport minister Merav Michaeli insists that this decision will not change even after elections, despite opposition leaders stating that it does not obligate them.

“This is not an election promise, this is work done over the entire year under my auspices. The light rail in the Dan district has already ‘left the station’,” Michaeli said, adding that ‘it’s going to happen.’
“Even a government with chareidim will not dare to cancel such a thing when more than 70% of the Israeli public not only supports it but requires it,” Michaeli concluded.
Michaeli announced that the train would be running “in another year” on Shabbat but it is unclear whether she will be in power in another month, as elections loom on November 1st. However she claimed that the announcement was not connected to elections, since it was part of her coalition agreement with Yair Lapid and she has been working on the issue for over a year.
The first phase of the light rail system traversing Tel Aviv, Bat Yam, Ramat Gan, Bnei Brak and Petah Tikva is set to open in 2023
