YU Statement On The NYT Storyhttps://t.co/R64eUHMFQ9 pic.twitter.com/MHOYbzQex7
— Yeshiva University (@YUNews) January 12, 2023
Three state lawmakers have questioned whether YU “misrepresented” itself as a secular institution in order to qualify for more than $230 million in public funds.
They penned a letter — signed by State Sens. Liz Krueger, the chair of the Finance Committee; Toby Ann Stavisky, the chair of the Committee on Higher Education, and Brad Hoylman, chair of the Judiciary Committee — asking Y.U. to account for money raised in 2009 and 2001 by the university for campus improvements through a public finance and construction agency.
The letter says that the university agreed the funds would not be spent on facilities used for “sectarian religious instruction or as a place of religious worship.”
The NY Times published the story on Thursday in an article entitled, “Was Yeshiva University Entitled to $230 Million in Public Funds?”
One excerpt reads: “…a group of high-ranking state lawmakers said it appeared that the flagship Modern Jewish Orthodox school might have misrepresented itself as a secular institution on at least two occasions in order to qualify for more than $230 million in public funds to build and renovate its facilities and restructure its pre-existing debts.”

Democrats hate religious people unless they are muslim.
How can you put lg++++ and torah values in one sentence!!!!! What in the world?!!
I have been arguing for month that the anti frum haters of nyt hate ALL Jews and not just Chasidim. Alas, this latest hate peddling article full of lies and distortions has proven me correct.
Hey New York times why are you single those nasty things against us? We are like you! We love a b c d e f g h i j k l m n o p q r s t u v w x y z people. We even go against our religious principles to show just how with you we really are.
So much for earning leftist credits.
YU,
You are sadly very confused and your letter is even more confusing.
What kind of LGTBQ come to yeshiva because of Torah values??
You live in a tipsy turvy world.
The NY Times has repeatedly demonstrated it’s anti- Orthodox, and at times almost antisemitic attitudes in it’s editorials and style of reporting. You can protest all you want but that will have no effect. Money is all they care about. If hundreds, or maybe even thousands of Jews, including non Orthodox who see through the Times’ bias, would cancel their subscriptions and contact their advertisers to tell them they will not purchase their products, that might make an impression on the Times.
Hypocrites !!!! The whole bunch of then , from the NYT , to every politician . Take a look at CUNY, & SUNY ‘s policies … be a foreigner , black or some other minority ,& your in .White , not a chance . Wait till the country self destructs because of all the free-bees !!! Oh …sorry , I’m being too prejudice .
LBTQ is against Torah values and should not be accepted in YU.
Shame on YU. Integrity was their last remnant of observances; now that’s gone as well.
I don’t know what torah YU is talking about but my torah (the one every Orthodox Jew has been reading for thousands of years ) says that lgbtqrstuv people get the death penalty that they deserve. even New York Times knows that, that’s why they are attacking YU. but somehow YU has a different Torah that even the NYT didn’t know existed. this looks really bad on YU. you went lower than the NYT. they understand this point that you missed.
YU is the nation’s “Flagship university…” therein lies the problem.
Using the money for secular purposes doesn’t mean that those secular funds should be used for something that it is against the Torah and the government should respect that a jewish religious institution should be able to be granted funds for secular studies that do not contradict the Torah and should not being discriminated because of that.
This or something like that should have been the YUs answer and putting a fight for it taking it all the way up to the Supreme Court and davening to Hashem to win.
No one even someone running a secular institution should be forced to do something against his religious freedoms as long as the public funds are being used for secular purposes.
The truth is that the orthodox jewish community pays taxes as well being part of the public so the question is what means public only those that agree with the majority on how to disburse the funds? The truth is that Public funds should represent the public even if they are religious and spent in religion as well unless the public discriminates against the public that happens to be relifious.
Good for yeshiva university! It’s a great and true answer !
Ny slimes is evil. I wouldn’t subscribe if they paid me. Unless they paid me enough…..
Why didn’t NYT just come out of the closet and publish their true name, “Der Sturmer”?
Horrible we daven that this university which is a livving Chillulshem shemayim should fall apart.
I remember once hearing from one of these shmendrick’s that the Machlokes between yena and Rav Aharon was so small that it should never have happened. Interesting where one has 7,000 Yeshivelight and one is dealing with this problem in his…
from the outcome we can see the beginning.
Even if there’s problem’s with lakewood there jewish problems not this.
YU look at yourself in the mirror and realize how low you’ve sunken, the diference between you and the Goyim is merely a few more “laws” it’s almost not discernable.
