DRAMA: Israeli High Court Disqualifies Shas Leader Deri, Rocking Political Establishment

JERUSALEM (VINnews) — The Israeli high court has acceded to the petitions against the appointment of Shas leader Aryeh Deri, disqualifying him from serving as a minister in Netanyahu’s sixth government. Deri is currently serving as health and interior minister in the government.

Shas leaders are now demanding swift legislation to prevent the court from using the “reasonability’ principle which served as the legal basis for the disqualification, and to promote further legislation to allow Deri to return to the ministry.

The 11-man panel decided by a 10-1 majority to order the prime minister to fire Deri.

The judges say that Deri’s appointment is “unreasonable in the extreme” due to his multiple convictions for corruption charges. They also cite “the position Deri presented to the Magistrate’s Court that convicted him of these charges, according to which he was quitting politics, and his conduct thereafter.”

Dissenting judge Elron said that there is no place for the court to order the prime minister to intervene. Elron said that the prime minister should ask the head of the elections committee if the crimes Deri had committed constituted a justification for his disqualification.

Following the High Court’s ruling against Deri, the petitioner in the case, the Movement for Quality Government, says Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu should “respect the ruling and dismiss Deri.”

The government “is not a rehabilitation facility for criminals,” it says.

The NGO says the decision is “an important step toward maintaining the rule of law, and a victory for the entire Israeli public.”

Even if Netanyahu accedes to the court’s demands, Deri does not intend to transfer the ministries to the Likud and instead he will deposit them with another Shas leader.

I’m sure most of the comments will be from the Right so I’ll give the left’s perspective. there are 2 side to the coin here

here it goes:

Deri was convicted 25 yeas ago with embezzlement of public funds, and 2 yeas ago with tax evasion. he serves jail time then and agreed to resign 2 years ago

The rules are simple, if you are convicted of crimes you can run and be elected as MK but cannot be minister, same applies to Ehud Olmert and others

these are the rules and the courts work with rules. the court can’t go Ah Deri is so popular in his community because they don’t publish is financial malfeasance and he has a black yarmulkah and he’s davens with kavanah so lets look the other way.

we have to decide fi Israel will be a country of laws or criminals like Litzman, Bibi and Deri can run the country. we will have to decide if crimes are no longer crimes when “our holy” community does it

we know what happens when we allow criminals to run a country, look at Russia for example

but what bothers me is IF the supreme courts investigates crimes done by LEFT politicians with the same rigor as they do to the RIGHT. i don’t have the answer to this question, it needs to be researched and analyzed. if you don’t know don’t just jump to conclusion

He pled guilty with no prison time.
Part of the plea was that he would refrain from political life
Was it a shavuas shuv?

The government “is not a rehabilitation facility for criminals,” it says.

Funny, I thought that’s exactly what government is. . .

Oh, this is going to get very interesting.

Shas wont take this laying down and Netanyahu will need a bit of creativity to navigate thru this.

This is why judicial review and changes are needed. This court is self serving it recruits and accepts on its own with no governmental over view. They have just decided what the voters really wanted. A woke candidate of their choice .

The Supreme Court of “Justice ” .is one sided against right wing and especially religious politicians.. If Deri will be willing to topple the government. And instead join the Lapid camp. They’ll. immediately clear his way politicially.
