JERUSALEM (JNS) – Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara demanded on Thursday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu fire coalition partner Aryeh Deri of the Shas Party from his government, in keeping with Wednesday’s Supreme Court ruling.

Baharav-Miara informed the prime minister that Deri must be removed as minister of interior and health and from his position as vice prime minister. The roles should be filled with replacements, she said.
The Supreme Court ruled by 10 to 1 that Deri’s appointments were unreasonable “in the extreme,” given his conviction on tax fraud in February 2022.
As a key figure in the coalition who stands at the head of a party with 11 Knesset seats, Deri is still expected to play a significant role in the government.
His best option may be an appointment as alternate prime minister. Based on previous court rulings, such a position wouldn’t be barred to Deri because of his criminal conviction, unlike other cabinet positions.
The Knesset’s legal adviser said the only way to appoint Deri as alternate prime minister would be for the government to dissolve itself and form a new one.
Deri is a convicted felon. he had no business running for office in the first place. Taking politics out of the equation, Netanyahu needs to go to prison for rampant corruption.
he should step down and avoid another election
I understand he promised the court to retire from politics when he was convicted. He needs help to keep his promise.
so much for being the only democracy in the middle east where the leftists courts control the government and ignore the will of the people
Once again the Israeli court has over turned the peoples will
Deri is a very good guy helped a lot of people. He recently approved lot of drug treatments for Cancer that Insurance didn’t pay before. But at this point if u have a conviction just go don’t let the government fall for that. He will be much more respected for leaving then staying
Deri took a plea in a tax case. Just as in America, in Israel, accountants try to figure out imaginative ways to claim deductions and other loopholes to reduce taxes. Sometimes they don’t hold up. Israel has no constitution, thus the court decision to bar Deri is not based on a specific law or interpretation of law, it is based on the caprice of the court. In reality, Deri is a great man and a terrific minister. The court barred him because of its hatred for the frum.
