CONNECTICUT (VINnews) — A massive blaze killed 100,000 chickens at a large Connecticut farm over the weekend. It is the latest in a long series of “mystery-fires” which have erupted at farms and impacted the already high cost of eggs.
Officials confirmed Monday that an estimated 100,000 hens were killed in a fire at the Hillandale Farms property in Bozrah, Conn. The report said that dozens of firefighters responded to the fire, which was contained to just one of the farm’s buildings. No cause has yet been determined.

Making things even more bizarre, farmers are noticing that chickens are not laying eggs. Although some may dismiss this as a conspiracy theory (many of which seem to be proven true of late), Fox host Tucker Carlson says this is a fact.
He tweeted: “Farmers have noticed something odd: their chickens aren’t laying eggs. They don’t appear sick with avian flu; they’re not dying. What’s causing it? Some have concluded their chicken feed is responsible.”
Carlson ran a segment on the phenomenon, and noted that smugglers are now trying to sneak eggs across the Mexican border.
Hillandale Farms, which has multiple properties in various states, raises more than 20 million chickens for eggs and is one of the top five egg producers in the country.
Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.) called on the FTC to investigate the increase in egg prices last week, asking them to look into whether the industry is using a record outbreak of bird flu as a cover for price gouging.
Average egg prices have more than doubled in the last year, from $1.79 in December 2021 to $4.25 in December 2022.
This rise in prices has been attributed to a nationwide avian flu outbreak, supply chain challenges and the rising cost of chicken feed.
The magnitude of bird-related and egg-related crises is almost incomprehensible. Just one farm last year lost over 5 million hens to bird flu. In October, another farm with 1 million chickens was impacted by the disease.
