MICHIGAN – (VINnews) Michigan Representative Rashida Tlaib, a progressive Democrat known for her views on Israel, has been criticized on Twitter for falsely claiming that a fight between Palestinian teenagers in Jerusalem was actually an attack by the “violent apartheid government of Israel.” Tlaib has previously made controversial comments about Israel, including labeling it an “apartheid” state that targets Palestinians and suggesting that support for Israel is incompatible with being a progressive.

Tlaib’s latest comments came in response to a tweet from the Institute for Middle East Understanding (IMEU), which showed a video of a fight at the Damascus Gate in Jerusalem during Ramadan festivities. IMEU claimed that Israeli soldiers were attacking Palestinians celebrating the holy month, and Tlaib quote-tweeted the post, stating that “this is the violent apartheid government of Israel” and urging her followers not to look away.

However, Twitter fact-checked Tlaib’s claim, providing a context box that linked to a Jerusalem Post article revealing that the video actually showed police breaking up a fight between Palestinian teenagers.
Twitter users, including the antisemitism watchdog StopAntisemitism, criticized Tlaib’s post, while IMEU continued to make outlandish claims against Israel, including accusations of “environmental apartheid” and “ethnic cleansing.” It was also revealed that committees associated with Tlaib and other “Squad”-linked Democrats had transferred hundreds of thousands of dollars to a consulting and advocacy firm run by an anti-Israel activist.
This is an incitement to hate Israel by a United States Congresswoman, based upon an out of context video that she is using to purposely mislead her followers, which thankfully was corrected by a Community Note.
