OPINION: ADL Must Remove the Divisive Julia Haart From its Leadership Summit

(VINnews) — The ADL is hosting a ‘National Leadership Summit’ as part of its upcoming ‘Never is Now’ conference. Although the program is mostly one that, commendably, will unite Jews and confront Jew-hatred with Achdus, to deliver a positive message – there is one glaring exception.

One of the featured speakers is Julia Haart of ‘My Unorthodox Life’.

It is unacceptable that the ADL would invite Haart to join the summit, when she has been viciously hateful and divisive toward the orthodox community, and has provided antisemites with immeasurable fodder.

As media consultant Yosef Rappaport tweeted: ‘Putting up a divisive antagonist of the Orthodox Jewish community is mind-boggling. somebody needs to resign over this hare-brained idea.’

Haart’s Netflix show paints the Charedi community in an extremely negative light. In an op-ed entitled ‘My Unorthodox Life’: The best gift to antisemites since ‘The Protocols’, a Jerusalem Post columnist wrote the following:

“Many people who are familiar with Orthodox Jewish communities were very disturbed by the show, mainly because of the many blatant misrepresentations.

Haart states that she is a proud Jew, sharing an insider story. She describes her former community as closed, clannish, misogynist and isolationist, recalling centuries of antisemitism. The “Yeshivish” community of Monsey, New York that Haart left, does not restrict women from driving or girls from singing, dancing and participation in sports. It is a mainstream Orthodox community in which brainwashing and oppression are not acceptable.

…Netflix and Jeff Jenkins gave antisemites their greatest media gift since The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Not the obvious acts of antisemitism that we experience today – swastikas sprayed on synagogues, cemeteries desecrated, Holocaust denial, physical violence and hate speech on college campuses. What Netflix has delivered is more subtle and potentially more dangerous. The antisemitic viewer meets a real Jewish family for the first time, who just happens to be living in a $55M Chelsea penthouse.

While the Protocols are clearly fake, Haart is real…

The antisemitic dog whistles are loud and clear. Netflix has worked centuries-old tropes into the script, with Haart as collaborator – as she stated to the New York Times: “Nothing went in there without my approval.”

To be clear, the ADL has done a great deal to not only fight antisemitism, but also unite various sects of Jewry. They have been instrumental and helping Orthodox Jewish causes, and for that we are grateful.

With that said, sharing a stage with Julia Haart, who has been no friend to the Jews, is a huge slap in the face to not just Charedim, but all Jews.

We thus call upon the ADL to remove Haart from the program and rescind its invitation.

The ADL is a non religious group. They don’t like much the Orthodox community. As far as that hateful woman…to claim that she is a proud Jew is the biggest joke. She does everything publicly which is against Judaism.More, she encourages her children to be proud with what they do publicly things that twenty years ago non-Jews wouldn’t do.

Highly misguided complaint.
This organization lobbies aggressively to cut school funding for Jewish day schools, directly affecting thousands of orthodox Jews, and the author is concerned about one random deviant?! The entire organization is a thorn in the side of Torah Judaism.

The current iteration of the ADL is nothing like the old. Progressive Jews often go out of their way to “other” frum Jews. They want her there precisely for who she is, they’re not going to take remove her.

What’s mind-boggling is that there are Jews who think the ADL is a chesed organization. It’s a left-wing progressive organization pushing wokeness. Safety for Jews is just the facade they use to remain relevant. Frum Jews are just a thorn in their side.

What is she a leader of? I usually am a big supporter of the ADL, both for its good work and against the slandererous attacks against it in fora like this. But Haart is not a Jewish leader. And she contributes to disunity. It isn’t my business if she doesn’t want to be religious but she has no business attacking those of us who do.

This sounds more like uproar from segment of frum community ill equipped with self confidence bashing Julia, than ADL conducting its affairs in a manner out of ordinary for it. Test: would the protestors be just as much up in arms if instead Ben and Jerry’s founders were invited to speak, whose opinions we also detest?

ADL is absolutely useless
A few hundred million dollar annual budget is being wasted
Jews are suffering and ADL is a waste
