JERUSALEM (VINnews) — Shas’s Minister of Welfare and Social Services Yakov Margi has clarified that a haredi youth who receives a call-up order must appear at the Draft Office.

“The law of the land – that is the law,” Margi told the Knesset Channel, paraphrasing a Talmudic dictum. “If the country calls you, then first of all, you go show up, tell them what is bothering you, ask to learn Torah or ask for a haredi track. I am not one of those who will tell you not to show up, to throw off every burden. The law of the land is the law.”
Earlier this month, Sephardic haredi rabbis, including Chief Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef, urged young men who received draft orders not to appear at the Draft Office.
This is not the first time Margi has voiced a more liberal stance: Last Thursday, he spoke about the haredi frameworks in the IDF, saying that a haredi framework would bring “great benefit.”
“If we are speaking about haredi brigades – there need to be adaptations,” he told Kikar Hashabbat in the mid-July interview. “I have no doubt that the rabbis will discuss the core of the matter and understand that the benefit is great for a young man who is in a haredi framework, and it will look different.”
He also said that the required number of haredim can be drafted without affecting those who learn Torah: “The Defense Ministry knows who to draft, and also the goal that the Defense Minister set for himself – and that is a goal which can be met without [affecting] the Torah world.”
In April, Mergi’s Shas colleague Interior Minister Moshe Arbel also diverged from the opinion of the rabbis, stating that said that “The charedi public must internalize, especially after Oct. 7th, that there is no moral possibility to maintain communities, many of whom are not studying Torah. The Vaad Yeshivot cancels the status of 1500 each year, they must take part of the burden [IDF service]. Additionally there are a significant number of institutions for so-called “At-risk youth” for which there is no justification not to be involved in the process [of integration into the IDF]
when do we finally stop claiming that these kneset members are shlichim of our Gedolim?
Whoever has children, who might have to go fight in the army, should not really get involved in Paskening the Shayla of whether it is right to abstain from enrolling. Such a person has a Negious.
“After October 7th” It is clear that the Mossad, Shabak, and IDF are lead by traitors who ordered the removal of five thousand soldiers from the Gaza border front line army bases Nachal Oz and Reim two days before the attack, and held back the IDF from defending against the attack for eight hours.
People making calls for enlistment into taking orders from these traitors might have a din of a massit and/or moser.
“Yehouda Dov”,did you see the endless grave problems in Israel today?Do we need 2 headlines about this purposedly created enrolment crisis when we are dealing with much more dangerous situations right now?
Who are we supposed to listen to?
Even the ireligious do not have respect for the court which issued this order.
i think the boys should go
can you imagine, if a army rep stuck his head ina yeshiva and asked for voluneers to peel potatoes or wash bed linens or fill clips with bullets, AS A CHESED, bochurim would run. so why cant they go for pay?
You think their gonna put them as fodder on the front lines?
your country needs you! GO!
your fellow Jews are getting killed, go!
the Torah is very clear about going to war to save ourselves, im not a rav but i cant see what possible heter there is
This person is not daas Torah.
